Victor Gollancz, 1951

Very well written and entertaining book.
The ambiance is rather spooky, sometimes perverse. Marriage is portrayed negatively, or was it me? A turning point in the betrayal/divorce drama I was living through at the time, this was the first book in a long time I could read in the "old way” – concentrating, enjoying, lost in story at times, and looking forward to reading, sweet return.
